Social and Economic Diagnosis in Communities with UPP (in Portuguese)

​The survey by the Federation of Industries of Rio de Janeiro (FIRJAN) aims to analyze the role of the program in 16 communities with Pacifying Police Units wich Sesi Citizenship covered. The program was created in August 2010 and brings together a number of initiatives to improve the living conditions of the residents. The study is a detailed examination of areas such as infrastructure, education, health, culture, sport and leisure.


A new history for Rio de Janeiro (in Portuguese)

Svetlana Shifrina, a 33 years-old business student from Ukraine, and Darcy Heigert, 30, an American, are both enrolled at the MBA program at the University of Saint Gallen, in Switzerland. Recently, they have visited the Alemão and Penha communities in Rio through 'Learning Journeys in Brazil', a study-trip organized by Fundação Dom Cabral, a Brazilian university. In an article written for the UPP RJ website, they explain this experience, acknoledge there are challenges that need to be faced in order to pacify areas once dominated by drug dealers, but are confident about the benefits the UPPs could generate to the local population in the long run.
