Inaugurated on April 26th 2010, the UPP situated at Providência will be assisting five thousand residents from the community and another for thousand who live in the surroundings. The place is emblematic: considered to be Brazil’s first ever slum, Providência is located just behind Rio’s Central Station (Central do Brasil), through which more than 600 thousand people pass every day.

The unit, which also assists two other slums – Pedra Lisa and Moreira Pinto – counts on 200 officers and has as its commandant Captain Glauco Schorcht. The UPP also impacts directly on the docks region, where a revitalization project is being carried out. The plan includes the refurbishing of the cultural pier houses at the Gambôa area and the restoration of the Mauá Square surroundings.
