The community of Jardim Batam, located in Realengo, Rio’s West zone, witnessed the opening of its own UPP on February 18th. With 12 years of service at the Military Police (PM), Captain Eliézer de Oliveira Farias has been chosen to command the 55 officers appointed for the new post. The building, which is a former criminal headquarter, now holds a swimming pool, classrooms and a communitarian vegetable garden. The community has 40 thousand inhabitants, distributed in 15 thousand houses.

The name Batam comes from the tree Urubatã, which was very common in the place when the occupation first started. Today, it is practically extinct, but a partnership between the Security and the Environmental departments is securing its return to the neighborhood by the plating of new seedlings.
